Fuck the new rules (sorry whoever proposed them)

G Gooch
V Sehwag
Viv Richards
J Miandad
R Ponting
I Botham
A Gilchrist
S Warne
W Akram
M Marshall
D Underwood.

I left out Muttiah Muralitharan as he is a chucking cunt. Hobbs and Sutcliffe would have obviously replaced Gooch and Sehwag had pre-war players counted.

I'm sorry for not being old enough to see him in his pomp, son.

I caught the back end of Gooch, and him being a fellow countryman I obviously have more memory of him

Hmmm, I would have dropped Marshall or Holding as good as they are whereas Sobers can bat and bowl

But it's your call

Re: England vs India 2018
One thing against the modern fast bowler is shorter tours.
Anderson has just played 5 Tests v India in 6 weeks.
Mentioned a while back that in the 1936/37 Ashes it took them 12 weeks to play 5 Tests.
Probably another reason that no other fast bowler will get close to 564.

When I was looking at the career of Anderson (2003- ?) & ‘here today gone tomorrow’ McGrath (1993 -2007) I saw that Steyn started around the same time as Anderson.
And because of injury & SA not playing so regularly only has about 88 (?) Tests compared to Anderson with 140 something

I think Hampshire have already got two in my team and they are not having another. Feel sorry for SA players like Barry Richards, at least he got to play a few tests unlike Kenny McEwan who was quality.

I enjoy the lifetime fantasy test 11. I think the one rule should be maximum TWO players from any one test playing nation in the starting eleven. Today I'm picking:-

Cook
Sehwag
Richards
Tendulkar
Kallis
Sangakkara
Botham
Warne
Akram
Marshall
McGrath

Don't think comparing bowling is a bad argument... I mean... the speed gun has been around now for what?? 45 years or so?? So you know whether someone was Quick or not... the video evidence is there on how much swing, seam movement or spin a bowler would get?? The one thing in modern day test cricketers favour is central contracts... if Jimbo was having to play county cricket as his predecessors did I'm not sure he'd be up where he is...

Fred Trueman's figures.... played in 603 FC games... bowled 99701 balls ... took 2304 wickets and yet only played in 67 Tests

Jim Anderson figures.... played in 234 FC games.... bowled 47688 balls... taken 909 wickets and played in 143 Tests...

... so that's 76 more tests......

Discredit = Put into PERSPECTIVE

To be honest one of my bugbears is comparing players as I find it extremely boring.
Just thought I’d add my views to stop the thread degenerating into a dull place where everyone agrees.

I see A Cook described Anderson as England’s greatest ever cricketer
More evidence to my point a while back about England’s greatest bowling combination and greatest batsman (plus his possible successor) playing in the last Ashes.
The idea that this was like England playing against a team containing Warne McGrath Ponting and Bradman was violently disagreed with.

Northern Sold 11:13 Wed Sep 12
Re: England vs India 2018
McGrath would deffo be in my all time test team (that I have seen in my lifetime) as one of the bowlers (along with Lillee, Holding, Warne and Botham)... perfect balance that would skittle any team....
